The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has the authority under the federal Plant Protection Regulations to establish a quarantine zone anywhere EAB has been confirmed in Canada. In January 2018, CFIA declared the entire City of Winnipeg as a regulated area (quarantine zone), and established rules governing the movement of ash wood and all firewood out of the regulated area.
Restricted articles (ash wood and all firewood) can legally be moved from the regulated area under certain conditions, but only with written permission from CFIA. Lack of appropriate permissions could result in stiff fines.
